Good Leadership Starts with Mind Over Matter

PASADENA, CA – September 29, 2003 – Maintaining the Mind Over Matter (M.O.M.) attitude helps leaders motivate and inspire others. Whether you are a manager, parent, teacher, or coach, the exercise of good leadership is important for the success of your team.

Paula Hines Lonergan, a freelance writer and author of A TITAN OF A MAN — A Coach of the Famous ‘71 Titans Who Inspired Generations of Young People, learned important leadership skills from her father, Coach Paul “Doc” Hines. “Doc” was the offensive line coach of the newly integrated 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team featured in the Disney movie “Remember the Titans.”

Ms. Lonergan says of her father, “He taught me how to exercise good leadership, and at the same time to show consideration and have empathy for others. He helped me to see if I put my mind to it, I can reach all of my goals in my life.” One of Doc’s players, Thorton Walker said, “[Doc] your pre-game speeches; they used to really fire us up…you have instilled the desire, determination, and work ethic that I have today.”

Successful coaches expect practice, hard work, and unselfishness from their players. They endeavor to build character in others and teach the importance of loyalty and integrity to the team. The techniques of successful coaches can be used in other aspects of leadership. To be a successful leader, you have to instill confidence in others and help them to fully develop their skills and abilities. A good leader has a passion, which is contagious and motivating. Using M.O.M. in exercising leadership motivates your team, whether in the boardroom, in the family circle, on the field, or in the classroom.
