Introduction
A key to attaining success in life is by developing a mind over matter attitude. This is seen in the remarkable life of Coach Paul “Doc” Hines. Doc was the offensive line coach of the newly integrated 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team featured in the Disney movie “Remember the Titans.”
With the help of Doc and the other coaches, the team succeeded in overcoming social barriers and personal differences. They had an undefeated season, which culminated in their winning the state championship. Furthermore, the team helped unite the community of Alexandria, Virginia. Their accomplishments were even acknowledged by the office of President Richard Nixon.
A Titan of a Man is the life story of Doc Hines as told through the eyes of his only daughter. As a coach, teacher, and father, he instilled character, courage, and determination in his players, students, and children. Many students attribute their success in life to Doc’s influence as a good leader and positive role model. Alonzo Bumbry, one of Doc’s students, went on to play professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles.
Successful coaches endeavor to build character in others. They teach the importance of loyalty and integrity to the team.
Good teachers realize they are partners with their students in helping them to be successful in life. They know the value of education that it is necessary to make learning an interesting challenge.
The principles and ideologies used by successful teachers and coaches can be applied in many aspects of life. Success starts with good leadership. To be a successful leader, one has to instill confidence in others and help them to fully develop their skills and abilities.
Success in life does not happen by accident. Applying the lessons embodied in the mind over matter attitude, you will find out how they benefit your team as a whole. This is true whether your team is in the classroom, on the field, in the boardroom, or in the family circle. A Titan of a Man demonstrates how the mind over matter attitude, which Doc believed and taught others, can help you to be a Titan success in life.
