About A Titan of a Man
Seven years ago I embarked on a project motivated by my heartfelt certainty of its importance. The year was 2002. It is a book about my father, and his life as one of the coaches featured in the Disney movie, Remember the Titans, from T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
With the help of Doc and the other coaches, the Titans team succeeded in overcoming social barriers and personal differences. They had an undefeated season, which culminated in their winning the state championship. Furthermore, the team helped unite the community of Alexandria, Virginia. Their accomplishments were even acknowledged by the office of President Richard Nixon.
Successful coaches endeavor to build character in others. They teach the importance of loyalty and integrity to the team. Good teachers realize they are partners with their students in helping them to be successful in life. They know the value of education that it is necessary to make learning an interesting challenge.
The principles and ideologies used by successful teachers and coaches can be applied in many aspects of life. Success starts with good leadership. To be a successful leader, one has to instill confidence in others and help them to fully develop their skills and abilities.
Success in life does not happen by accident. Applying the lessons embodied in the mind over matter attitude, you will find out how they benefit your team as a whole. This is true whether your team is in the classroom, on the field, in the boardroom, or in the family circle. A Titan of a Man demonstrates how the mind over matter attitude, which Doc believed and taught others, can help you to be a Titan success in life.
My book, A Titan of Man—A Coach of the Famous ’71 Titans Who Inspired Generations of Young People, was published in late 2003. I presented it to my parents as a surprise on their wedding anniversary. With all my inexperience as a publisher, A Titan of a Man has its own quirks. Yet, I hope to tell this story with details behind the scenes from an insider’s viewpoint.
It has been over a decade since the movie Remember the Titans hit the big screen and over 40 years since T.C. Williams High School was integrated. Since then we have seen the election of an African-American president, an African-American Mayor and an African-American Police Chief in Alexandria, Virginia. I thought it was time to re-visit the strides made in race relations in the city of Alexandria and beyond, as well as to re-cap the positive lessons we can all learn from the movie, from history in general, and from my father’s life.
